A3 long / Very weak, nice clarity for use in P90 pickups but very low output for PAF pickups.
Alnico 3 – Alnico III
It may be a little counterintuitive, but Alnico III is the weakest of the magnets used in pickups because it has no cobalt. But I guess it’d be confusing to just call it ‘Alni.’ It has the lowest magnetic pull, which means the strings are less influenced by the pickup’s magnetic pull, and this makes it a popular choice for neck pickups. It’s a little more ‘confident’ in its tone compared to Alnico II, although both exhibit a similar ‘softness.’ Many players like to balance an Alnico III neck pickup against an Alnico II in the bridge.

Through the P.A.F. era Alnico grade somewhat mirrors the choice of Alnico grade for P-90 pickups. Alnico 2 and Alnico 4 were commonly used in 50’s era P-90’s and it is also common to see these same magnet grades in use in P.A.F. humbucker pickups. This is only logical since the magnet size is the same for both P.A.F.’s and P-90’s. Less commonly used in a P.A.F. is Alnico 3 which is used in some early 50’s P-90’s. Alnico 5 is used in P.A.F. pickup but is less common in P-90 pickups. One interesting detail is A2 is very often used in the neck pickup of both P.A.F. humbucker pickups and P-90 single coil pickups in conjunction with Alnico 4 or Alnico 5 in the bridge. Apparently this was done to balance the neck and bridge pickups by putting the weaker A2 magnet in the neck pickup. However A2 magnets can be found in vintage bridge positions PAF’s and they sound wonderful.

Alnico II
You’ll find these on the earliest Telecaster guitars of the 1950s. It is especially good for middle-position pickups, and it contributes to a very sweet and musical “vintage-y” sound.

Alnico III
The weakest of the three because it actually contains no cobalt. Since it exhibits the least amount of magnetic pull, it’s the type that impedes free string vibration the least, hence making it a great choice for neck pickups (over which there is usually the greatest amount of string vibration). This is the type used in the first Stratocaster guitars in the mid-1950s, and use of this particular alnico blend is one of the reasons why their neck pickups sound so amazingly good.

Alnico V
The strongest of the three; more powerful in tone and response. Its greater output makes it a good choice for bridge pickups, over which there is usually a smaller amount of string vibration. Good for an aggressive, punchy sound. Alnico III Round Bar PAF Alnico Magnets with Beveled Top
