Linear solenoids are versatile electromagnetic actuators perfect for creating precise linear motion in your projects, whether it’s for locking mechanisms, valves, or push-pull applications.

Solenoids are basically electromagnets: they are made of a big coil of copper wire with an armature (a slug of metal) in the middle. When the coil is energized, the slug is pulled into the center of the coil. This makes the solenoid able to pull (from one end) or push (from the other).

Push-pull solenoids are the most robust type of linear solenoids, providing a high holding force at a comparably low power input.

Push Pull Solenoids Linear Solenoids

This solenoid in particular is nice and strong and has a slug with a slanted cut and a good mounting bracket. It’s basically an electronic lock, designed for a basic cabinet or safe or door. Normally the lock is active so you can’t open the door because the solenoid slug is in the way. It does not use any power in this state. When 9-12VDC is applied, the slug pulls in so it doesn’t stick out anymore and the door can be opened.

This Solenoid Latch comes with a mounting bracket which can be removed with two screws. Once removed the solenoid can be rotated 180 and remounted. Paired with a relay you can easily have a low voltage system control this and other higher voltage devices.

The “Push/Pull” solenoids of HSMAG are typical on/off linear actuators; they feature the most robust series of linear solenoids and are well suited for “heavy duty” applications. Their intelligent magnetical design allows high holding force at a comparably low current. Therefore push pull solenoids are ideal actuators for applications for which power consumption and heat dissipation are critical. They are called “Push/Pull” because both shaft ends are available, so the solenoid can be used as pushing solenoid or pulling solenoid, depending which shaft end is used for mechanical connection – but because of reluctance working principle the active moving direction when powering the coil is only unidirectional. Applications can be found in medical, laboratory and analytical equipment, e.g. in electrical pinch valves or in optical or semiconductor industry and lock applications.

We differentiate between “Small Push/Pull” and “Push/Pull” solenoids; the difference is related to the size and the mounting concept (“Small Push/Pull” use threaded holes in the base plate, “Push/Pull” have mounting studs). In the Push/Pull version there are two pole piece versions: flat for short stroke and high holding force, conical for longer stroke and higher starting force.
