Relatively new to the music market, Alnico 8 offers a great alternative to ceramic magnets. These are strong magnets with a naturally aggressive tone. Used often in hot bridge position pickups, these magnets offer a heavy bottom, high output, and relatively full mids.

AlNiCo (cast)
-Remanence(Br), measure the strength of the magnetic field;
-Coercivity (Hcb), the material’s resistance to becoming demagnetized;
-Energy product (BHmax), the density of magnetic energy, which relates to the magnetic flux output per unit volume. Higher values indicate stronger magnets
-Curie temperature (Tc), the temperature at which the material loses its magnetism.

Very Powerful, has a lot in common with A4 when fully charged. When degaussed, it reminds me of a strong A2 without the first and second string weakness. Having a much bigger personality than it’s alnico counterparts, its basically a sculptable ceramic magnet. I see this magnet used a lot in lap and pedal steel type instruments. Unbelievably strong for the Alnico family. This I feel is what helps A8 make little pickups sound huge!

What’s more relevant is that Alnico is magnetically “softer” (It has a higher reversible permeability) than ceramics, i.e. it changes its field more when affected by the string’s movement. This effect is not very strong, but it notably influences the pickup’s electrodynamics: the inductance becomes bigger, as a result the resonance frequency is lowered. Also, Alnico is an electrical conductor; this will “drain away” some of the resonance.

All these effects together cause Alnico pickups to sound somewhat warmer, gentler than ceramic-magnet pickups; however other factors such as winding number are of cause also important – it’s not really possible to say “that’s an Alnico sound”. Customer Rough Cast or Vingate PAF Alnico Bar Pickup Magnets
