Samarium Cobalt SmCo Countersunk Ring Magnets
A SmCo ring magnet is a SmCo disc magnet with a concentric hole inside it. A SmCo countersunk magnet is a SmCo ring magnet with one side appearing as a standard ring but the other side has an angled countersink to ideally allow a screw head to fit inside flush, the countersink angle usually being (but not always) 90 degrees. A SmCo counterbore ring magnet is a ring magnet with a cylindrical flat-bottomed hole on one side that enlarges the main concentric hole to take a cap head screw.

SmCo countersunk ring magnets are also known as SmCo countersunk magnets.
SmCo counterbore ring magnets are also known as SmCo counterbore magnets.
The SmCo ring magnets, SmCo countersunk ring magnets and SmCo counterbore ring magnets are all usually axially magnetised (magnetised along the central axis). It is possible to produce these magnets in a diametrically magnetised form upon request we produce custom magnets.
For the axially magnetised SmCo magnets, one end is a North pole face; the other end is a South pole face. For ring magnets if you have a North face showing but want to use the South face, simply turn the ring over. For the SmCo countersunk ring magnet and SmCo counterbore ring magnet, this is not so simple. A SmCo countersunk ring magnet or SmCo counterbore ring magnet described as a North has the North on the countersink or counterbore face (the other side in a South). A SmCo countersunk ring magnet or SmCo counterbore ring magnet described as a South has the South on the countersink or counterbore face (the other side in a North). If you are using the SmCo ring magnets (any style) to attract to mild steel (i.e. to attract to a ferromagnetic material) then any type of SmCo ring magnet could be used. Sometimes arranging the magnets in a N-S-N-S- configuration may allow a small boost in holding force because the magnet interact in a positive way when near enough to each other. When a ring magnet is attracting a ring magnet, then you will need a North face on one magnet to be attracting a South face on the other magnet (using the rule of unlike poles attract), in which case you probably require equal quantities of North versions and South versions (remembering that a pure ring magnet just needs flipping over to reverse its polarity so the pure rings do not need to be sold as North or South versions).
When using the SmCo ring magnets, please do not over tighten the screws onto the SmCo ring magnets because they will break. The SmCo material is a sintered powder and too much force on it will break, fracture or shatter the magnet (SmCo is the most brittle of all the magnets).
The SmCo magnets are supplied unplated. We can custom produce the magnets to have a protective coating such as nickel or black epoxy (for enhanced corrosion protection) – other platings are possible. Alternative grades of SmCo magnet are also possible because we produce custom magnets.
