Here is a brief explanation of knurling:
With knurling, a round workpiece is pressed against another round tool and rolled so that both rotate.
The profile of the tool is transferred to the workpiece.
Knurls can make a workpiece more grippy and thus prevent it from slipping, such as on a dumbbell.
