Alnico Magnets for Pickups
Alnico magnets come in three main grades: 2, 3, and 5:
Alnico 2 traces back to the days of the 1950 Telecasters. This class seems to work well for middle-position pickups. It is known by its sweet, vintage tone, and there seem to be little disadvantages to using it.
Alnico 3 is the weakest of the three grades. It contains less cobalt, a core ingredient in the rest of the Alnico family. Because of the decrease in magnetic pull, it works wonders for neck pickups, where there is the most string vibration.
Alnico 5 is the strongest of the three alnico grades. The tone and response of the magnet is more powerful than its two cousins. This makes it perfect for bridge pickups, where there is the least vibration. If you want an aggressive, in-your-face kind of sound, Alnico 5 is your best bet.

Concerning rod magnets; it is important to note that there are three standard diameters used in the SAE pickup world: (.187″, .195″ and .250″) This does not speak to the pickups made using the metric system. The point I’m trying to illustrate is this; the greater the mass of a magnet, the greater its full charge will be. This is because there will be more Alinco there by weight, and thus, you’ll have more mass that will hold a charge. This is important when considering a stagger pole pickup design or when selecting your rod magnets height.

Magnet strength is measured in a unit known as Gauss. Tonal descriptions are being made assuming the pickup has moderate output; between 6 and 8k. Generally speaking, these descriptions can be applied to rod style magnets. Though, rod magnets are incredibly unique; in that the magnet is the pole piece and not just a pole piece touching a magnet located at the bottom side of the coil(s).
