Ceramic magnets: These came into fashion in the ’70s, particularly as used in high output pickups. Ceramic magnets are more affordable than Alnico and also can be stronger, proportionally, so they are often used to create “hot” pickups that drive an amp hard. They are also used by several makers, though, in smaller quantities to produce creative designs where space is tight.

Lesser-seen alternatives: Rubberized-ferrite magnets were used in many cheaper pickups of the ’60s, such as the great-sounding Teisco gold foil pickups that have developed a major following (and therefore aren’t so cheap anymore!). Powerful “rare earth” magnets such as neodymium are used in some ultra-modern designs. All alternative types of magnets induce different sonic properties according to their magnetic strength and the ways in which they are used. Bar Ceramic 8 Guitar Pickup Magnets

Ceramic (hard ferrite) magnets are one of the most economical types to produce. They are composed of iron oxide and strontium carbonate and are dark gray in color and not metallic in appearance. Being cheaper than alnico they are often used in, but not restricted to, pickups in budget guitars. This does not mean that pickups with ceramic magnets sound worse than those with alnico pickups, but they do sound different. Tone is subjective and ceramic magnets are the preferred choice for many.

Other Magnet types are also used in pickups. During the 1970’s Fender used CuNiFe (copper, nickel, iron) alloy magnets in their wide range humbuckers. It was short lived as production of CuNiFe loaded pickups ceased in 1979. Some pickups are being manufactured with rare earth magnets like Neodymium and Samarium Cobalt. Some of these pickups are designed for their hi-fidelity frequency response and are often designed for use with acoustic guitars.
