Alnico magnets: These magnets are made from an alloy of aluminum, nickel, and cobalt, mixed with iron and some other metals. Alnico was used in the vast majority of classic pickups through the 1950s and ’60s.

It comes in different compositions, with Alnico II, III, IV (though quite rare), and V used in pickup making. These run approximately from softer to stronger magnetism, leading to a bolder, firmer sound as they go up, all else being equal.

Choose A4 long / Balanced mids, treble and low end, drier toned than A2. Alnico 4 – Not as common as the other more traditional materials, Alnico 4 is used by few pickup winders such as David Allen, Bare Knuckles, and Mojotone. The opinion is that Alnico 4 combines the warm feel of Alnico 2 but with better attack and note definition. We really like the tone and pick response of the David Allen P-51 humbucker, which is an Alnico 4 pickup.

Alnico magnets come in three main grades: 2, 3, and 5:
Alnico 2 traces back to the days of the 1950 Telecasters. This class seems to work well for middle-position pickups. It is known by its sweet, vintage tone, and there seem to be little disadvantages to using it.
Alnico 3 is the weakest of the three grades. It contains less cobalt, a core ingredient in the rest of the Alnico family. Because of the decrease in magnetic pull, it works wonders for neck pickups, where there is the most string vibration.
Alnico 5 is the strongest of the three alnico grades. The tone and response of the magnet is more powerful than its two cousins. This makes it perfect for bridge pickups, where there is the least vibration.
