A little higher output than alnico 3, more developed overall sound, a bigger sound, rounded treble. I feel it has a more assertive bass response and more mid range. The higher strings seem to have less depth or bass when compared to other strings. This helps to creates a very smooth breakup. The highs are more subdued when compared to A3, I would say not quite as strong or deep.

Alnico 2 produces warm and very vintage sounding tones, generally has more mid tones. In the order of magnetic strength, Alnico 2 is actually in the middle when compared to Alnico 3 and Alnico 5 rod magnets.

Ah, but it’s more complicated than that. The size and type of magnet you use in your pickup has a big influence on the sound that the pickup produces, as does the type of wire: how thick it is, how it’s insulated, how it’s wound around the bobbins, how many turns of wire. Then there are the pole pieces: different materials there can also affect the magnetic field in different ways. And adjustable pole pieces – which Gibson pioneered – can also help you to refine the magnetic field and its interaction with different strings. Is the B string a little quiet compared to the rest, especially when you’re running a clean tone? Alnico II is associated with the original PAF humbucker, and it’s still used today in a great number of pickups. The tone is relatively soft and clear, often described as sweet, with a slight rounding off of the more brittle treble frequencies. It can sound very musical and mellifluous with a clean tone, and rather ’singing’ with overdrive. If you’re running a hotter, more distorted tone you may find that Alnico II humbuckers tend to provide excellent note separation for complex chords.
