WHAT IS, AND WHY USING IRON POWDER CORE?

Iron powder core are commonly used in power conversion, line filter applications and radio frequency applications. Oftentimes, iron powder cores substitute ferrite cores. Ferrite cores have a high permeability so it needs an air gap to reduce this permeability. This air gap has the disadvantage of power loss, leading to the risk of a hot spot.

Iron powder cores do not need the additional air gap. The characteristics of iron powder cores reduce the power loss. Furthermore, the saturation flux density in ferrite cores is around 400 mT and decreases with temperature. Iron powder cores have the saturation flux densities of more than 1T.

Iron powder cores may come in numerous sizes and configurations, each of which is available in different materials. However, the toroidal cores are the most efficient configuration due to its highly shelf-shielding characteristic. Iron powder toroidal core is seldom necessary to shield a toroidal inductor as most of the flux lines are contained within the core.

Features of Toroidal Cores

The maximum operating temperature of toroidal cores is 150℃.

The toroidal cores are coated with epoxy resin with minimum 500V AC breakdown.

The toroidal shaped provides good magnetic flux coupling and low stray flux leakage.

The toroidal shape is the height (also referred as “thickness”) is easy to vary and requires no tooling changes.

Application of Toroidal Cores

This toroids products offer a simple, compact solution for making inductors, coupled inductors and transformers. RF circuits, EC power supply chokes, motors dimmer control filters.
