A magnetic stir bar is a magnet that is encased in material that won’t react with the fluid it is immersed in. The HSMAG stir bar magnets included a molded layer of PTFE (a.k.a. Teflon), which is not reactive for many liquids. The magnet is placed within a container and made to spin with an external magnetic field.

Cylindrical magnetic stirring bars offer excellent centering and smooth running characteristics.

Useful notes:

Length of stir bar depends on the flask base diameter. Normally, the stir bar length should be between 30 and 60% of the flask base diameter.
The diameter of the stir bar depends on the nature of the mixed solution. As the viscosity of the solution increases, the optimum diameter of the stir bar increases.
Speed of mixing also determines the optimum size of the stir bar; if a high mixing speed is required, smaller size stir bar should be used to reduce the vortex depth.
Please note that magnetic stirrers are more suitable for low and medium viscosity solutions. For high viscosity (thick) solutions, such as gels, mechanical (overhead) stirrers can be used.
