Sichuan magnetic material industry development
The magnetic material industry is ushering in a “good day” Sichuan is becoming a “hot spot” for industry-university-research linkage
The China Magnetic Materials Industry Development Summit Forum attracted many domestic academicians, experts and business leaders in the field of magnetic materials to participate. According to the person in charge of an enterprise, relevant forums and summits have been held many times this year.
Behind this is the vigorous development of the magnetic material industry. Taking high-performance sintered NdFeB as an example, in 2020, the industry predicts that domestic enterprises will ship about 210,000 tons in 2021, but in fact, the shipment will reach 280,000 tons in 2021, an increase of more than 30%.
Benefiting from the development of the clean energy industry, the magnetic material industry is ushering in a “good day”
At the forum that day, the speeches of many guests mentioned that the high-performance sintered NdFeB industry is experiencing capacity expansion. As the core material in the rare earth permanent magnet motor of new energy vehicles, an average of about 2.5 kg of high-performance sintered NdFeB is used for each new energy vehicle. In addition, this magnetic material is widely used in wind power generators and digital products.

Sichuan magnetic material industry development
In the past 20 years, the compound annual growth rate of the high-performance sintered NdFeB industry was around 20%, but in recent years, the compound annual growth rate of the industry has shown signs of accelerating growth. “The core reason lies in the development of industries such as new energy vehicles. With the popularization of the concept of energy conservation and environmental protection, this will bring new development opportunities to the magnetic material industry.” Pan Lin, chairman of the China Electronic Materials Industry Association, said.
This point has reached a consensus in the academic and business circles. Du Wei, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences who spoke via video link that day, said: NdFeB rare earth permanent magnet materials will continue to maintain the “throne”. “At present, the academic community is studying the fourth generation of rare earth permanent magnet materials, but no possible replacement materials have been found yet.”
On the one hand, the demand of the industry continues to grow, and on the other hand, the status of alternative materials is difficult to challenge, which also provides confidence for the industry to expand production capacity. At the forum that day, the heads of several related companies introduced specific plans for industry expansion.
Similarly, in the field of soft magnetic materials, the vigorous development of the photovoltaic industry has also brought opportunities for the photovoltaic power inverter market.
At the same day’s forum, the “Mianyang Initiative for the Development of China’s Magnetic Materials Industry” was also released, advocating that the industry take the lead in the transformation, respond to the general trend, and increase vitality, and actively develop high-performance, Low-power magnetic materials and devices help the efficient development of new energy industries such as solar energy, wind energy, biomass energy, nuclear energy, and geothermal power generation, as well as new energy automobile industries such as electric vehicles and charging piles. “China has advantages in scientific research in related fields, and there are a large number of related companies in the industry. We encourage everyone to work hard in related directions and achieve new breakthroughs in the field of independent and controllable core technologies.” Pan Lin said.
Sichuan’s innovation chain industry chain has benefited, and existing enterprises have invested 28 billion yuan “optimistic”
The development momentum of the magnetic material industry is good. How can Sichuan make efforts in the industrial layout? This topic also attracted the attention of many guests.
In fact, Sichuan is rich in rare earth resources and has formed a production and processing system covering all aspects of mining and dressing, smelting and separation, and deep processing.
This has also been recognized by the industry’s “real money”. At the forum that day, an industrial project in Sichuan was mentioned by many guests – Yestar (Mianyang) Rare Earth Permanent Magnet New Material Industrial Park. The total investment of the project is 28 billion yuan. After completion, it can produce 100,000 tons of high-performance sintered NdFeB per year, of which only the first phase of the project can produce 25,000 tons of high-performance sintered NdFeB per year, which is one of the single factories in the industry. most.
In addition to upstream raw materials, attracting the investment of this enterprise is also related to the broad market prospects and rich upstream and downstream industrial chains in the Sichuan-Chongqing region. According to reports, the 25,000-ton production capacity of the first-phase project is mainly used to meet the needs of the local new energy industry and wind power generation equipment in Sichuan, and the remaining production capacity will provide raw materials for digital products.
From the perspective of the business community, another advantage of the development of Sichuan’s magnetic material industry is the scientific research foundation. In Mianyang alone, there are scientific research institutions such as the only comprehensive applied technology research institute in the country, and the National Magnetic Materials and Devices Core Capability Development Unit, such as the No. 9 Institute of China Electronics Technology.
According to Huang Hao, chief engineer of Mianyang Juxing Permanent Magnet Materials Co., Ltd., the company will jointly establish Southwest Rare Earth Research Institute with relevant leading enterprises in Sichuan, General Iron and Steel Research Institute, Ningbo Institute of Materials Science and Technology of Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Mianyang High-tech Zone to promote the linkage between industry, education and research. “To build it into a top scientific research institution, we must not only strive to be at the forefront in terms of industrial scale, but also be at the forefront of new technology and academic research and development.” Huang Hao said.
