Three-phase synchronous generators with permanent magnets are manufactured in our Institute. Generators are dedicated for use mostly in small hydroelectric or small wind power plants. They are characterized by very high efficiency (up to 97%), which is much higher than in case of either asynchronous or dc generators. Due to this efficiency, power losses occurring during transformation of wind energy into electrical energy are small. So, our generators yield more electrical energy than other types of generators. These generators have been acclaimed as modern and effective energy sources and awarded Medal of the President of Association of Polish Electrical Engineers (SEP), honour bestowed during International Power Industry Permanent Magnets Motors & Generators

Permanent Magnets Motors & Generators

PM generators produce voltage which is directly (linearly) proportional to rotational speed. At rated speed and load, the voltage at generator terminals is equal to the rated voltage; when rotational speed is increased, this voltage also rises, since the generator is not equipped with any speed or voltage limiter. This must be taken into account during designing e.g. small wind power electric plant.

On account of high prices of commercial wind power plants, we recommend erecting them on DIY basis.

Electrical energy had best be used for heating tap water (boiler) or additional heating of rooms. In case of houses equipped with central heating, it is usually recommended to place additional heaters in central heating circuit. Constructing wind power plant on your own is a very cost-effective investment. However, it must be pointed out that effectiveness depends on average wind speed at wind turbine location.

Prototype of modern, low-speed PM synchronous generator, dedicated to small and micro hydroelectric plants has been worked out in Komel. This generator is connected to the power grid via dedicated frequency inverter. Application of modern power generation set (i.e. synchronous generator and power electronics frequency inverter) results in significant increase of energy production efficiency in these power plants. -possibility of wide-range and smooth control of water turbine rotational speed has been introduced (control carried out in accordance with current hydrologic conditions in situ);
-squirrel cage asynchronous generator has been replaced by highly efficient PM synchronous generator;
-mechanical gear between turbine and generator has been eliminated (generator and turbine are assembled with a common shaft)
-power is recuperated into the network at high power coefficient factor cosj >> 1.

This new design of generating set is in particular recommended for the mini- or micro-hydroelectric plants using propeller-type water turbines. Taking into account Polish hydrologic conditions, which are characterized mostly by low heads and in view of required low investment costs, it is most cost-effective to use propeller-type turbines. These turbines resemble Kaplan turbines and the main difference is that it is not possible to change blade incidence angle in propeller-type turbines. The significant drawback of propeller turbines is that at given effective head and water flow intensity values, high efficiency of energy transformation is obtained within a narrow range of rotational speed. Even a small deviation of turbine speed from its optimum value at given water conditions results in large decrease of turbine efficiency.

In order to upkeep high efficiency of energy transformation, independent of current water conditions, it is necessary to adjust rotational speed of the propeller-type turbine. This speed control is not possible in case of standard generator set containing asynchronous generator connected directly to the power grid, when generator must operate at constant rotational speed slightly higher than its asynchronous speed. The possibility of controlling rotational speed of water turbine in accordance with variable water flow conditions is one of main advantages of generator sets basing on permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG) connected to the power grid via frequency inverter.

The basic ratings of prototype permanent magnet synchronous generator are:
– Rated powerPN = 75 kW;
– Rated power coefficient cosj = 1;
– Rated rotational speed fN = 333 rpm;
– Rated efficiency hN = 96 %.
