NdFeB Rare Earth Magnets – Neodymium Magnets (Nd-Fe-B) Overview

Neodymium Magnets (Neodymium Iron Boron Magnets), also known as NdFeB, NIB, or Neo magnets, are the most widely-used type of rare-earth magnet. It is the strongest type of permanent magnet made from an alloy of Neodymium, Iron, and Boron with the Nd2Fe14B tetragonal crystalline structure. It has replaced other types of magnets in many applications in modern products that require strong permanent magnets, such as motors in cordless tools, hard disk drives, and magnetic fasteners.

Use of sintered Neodymium magnets, either as an individual magnet or in an assembly, without license is prohibited by the Patent Law of the United States of America. All sintered Neodymium Iron Boron magnets supplied by Hangseng Magnets Company are licensed.

NdFeB Rare Earth Magnets Key Advantages

Neodymium magnets are the most powerful commercially produced magnets.
Higher Maximum Energy Product ranging from 30 MGOe to 52 MGOe.
Neodymium magnets can replace Samarium Cobalt magnets, especially where operating temperature is lower than 176F/80C.
Very high strength and relatively low cost.
Compared to Alnico and Sm-Co magnets, relatively easier to machine.

NdFeB Rare Earth Magnets Quick Leads

Manufacturing process – sintering (most common), injection molding, and compression bonding.
Shapes available – blocks, bars, discs, rings, cylinders, arc segments, or irregular shapes, etc.
Wide range of Grades available – from 3512 to 3833 or N35 to 38AH (First 2 digits represent Bhmax, and second two digits represent Intrinsic Coercivity, Hci.)
Density: 7.4 -7.6 g/ cm3; Hardness: 600 {Hv}
Prone to oxidation, plating (Ni-Cu-Ni) is recommended
Some particular grades of Stanford Magnets can achieve 446F/230C, the Max working temperature.
Saturation magnetizing field required – about 35kOe
Machining – Neodymium magnets should be machined by grinding using diamond wheels, however, of hard magnet materials, Neo magnets are the easiest ones. We can successfully machine very small magnets with tolerances up to .001″.
